Featuring Cassidy Morway & Guerrina Crane Service
Underhill, VT

This Fall, the Poulin Frameworks team completed a fantastic full home build in Underhill, Vermont. The project started with design, followed by foundation preparation, walk-out basement, first- and second-floor assembly, and finally, full loft and roofing buildout. Many partners were involved in the project to make things smooth and efficient.

One partner, in particular, critical to every Frameworks job is the crane operator. Guerrina Crane Service, based in North Hero, was on the job and pushed through a demanding schedule and weather to successfully pull the project off. Owner/operator Dominic Guerrina balanced his time on-site alongside one of his newest team members, Cassidy Morway.

As Cassidy took the controls on the last day, we were impressed by her skills in action, but we were excited to meet her and hear more about her story and how she started in crane operation. We’re honored to capture some photos of Cassidy at work, ask her questions about her story, and feature her here on the Poulin blog! We hope you enjoy hearing more of Cassidy’s stories through our brief Q&A here:

Poulin Frameworks:
How did you discover you wanted to become a crane operator / what inspired you?

Cassidy:
I knew I wanted to be a crane operator from a young age. I grew up operating tractors, excavators, skid steers, and other equipment and always loved it! When I was about six years old, my dad and I were on our way to camp in New York. We passed a construction site that had a swing cab crane. I remember asking, “Dad, what is that?” He smiled and explained, “That’s a crane. They lift big, heavy stuff.” I was instantly so curious and excited, “That is super cool!” My dad gave me a reassuring nod and said, “That could be you one day.” From that moment on, I felt a strong desire to operate a crane, and that dream has grown with me ever since.

Poulin Frameworks:
What has operator instruction and training been like for you?

Cassidy:
My experience with operator instruction and training has been both challenging and rewarding. I attended Essex Technical Center in high school, and in September, ATS in Wisconsin.  As someone with dyslexia, I’ve faced significant difficulties with reading, which made the textbook-heavy portions of the training especially tough for me. Many of the tests relied heavily on reading, and that presented a struggle.

However, when it came to hands-on practical tests, such as operating the swing cab and fixed cab, I excelled. I thrive in practical environments where I can physically apply what I’ve learned. Additionally, working with Guerrina Crane has been incredibly beneficial; I have the privilege of learning from a fantastic teacher/boss, Dominic Guerrina, and coworkers who have provided me with invaluable knowledge about cranes. This personalized instruction has made a significant difference in my understanding and confidence in operating machinery.

Poulin Frameworks:
How many years have you been with Guerrina?

Cassidy:
I’ve been with Guerrina Crane for almost a year now, and it has truly been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I attended Essex Technical Center sophomore through senior year. I completed the pre-tech mechanical program and the heavy machinery program and, in my senior year, attended the forestry program. I became eligible for an internship program my senior year and knew I wanted to dive into the crane industry. The school did not have an open relationship with a crane company that might offer me the opportunity I was looking for. So, I started asking around for referrals on what companies I could approach and might be a good fit.

Guerrina Crane kept being mentioned to me, so I went knocking on the door and asked if I could shadow for a few days.  Dominic agreed to allow me to shadow for a couple of days in October.  As soon as my shadow days were over I presented the internship opportunity to him and begged him to let me complete it with him and his company! Luckily Dominic agreed and I began in November 2023. I worked through my senior year with him and was offered a full-time job within a couple of months, contingent on my completing high school.

Poulin Frameworks:
What has been the best part of working with the Guerrina team?

Cassidy:
The best part of working with the Guerrina team has undoubtedly been the incredible people I interact with daily. My coworkers are supportive and enthusiastic about teaching me new skills and sharing their knowledge. The greatest influence on my development has come from my boss, Dominic Guerrina. He took a chance on me despite my limited experience in the crane industry, and his mentorship has been invaluable. Dominic fosters a learning environment where questions are welcomed and he never shows frustration when I encounter challenges. He genuinely cares about my comfort level with tasks and encourages me to grow at my own pace. Furthermore, his commitment to my improvement extends beyond work-related skills, as he takes the time to support my personal development as well. Working with Dominic and the Guerrina team has been a transformative experience I sincerely appreciate.

Poulin Frameworks:
Can you share a little about yourself outside of work? What do you enjoy for fun and recreation when you’re not behind the controls?

Cassidy:
Outside of work, I have a very large and close family. I love spending time with them as well as my boyfriend;  they bring so much balance and laughter into my life. I have a deep appreciation for the great outdoors and love exploring nature’s beauty or enjoying a peaceful day of hunting. When I’m not out adventuring, I also enjoy cozy nights where I can unwind with a good movie and some delicious snacks. These simple pleasures balance my life and keep me energized for my work behind the controls.

Thank you again to Cassidy, Dominic, and the Guerrina Crane Service team. We look forward to collaborating more on future projects! Warm wishes from the Poulin Frameworks team.
